Ilya Sutskever’s new startup, Safe Superintelligence, raised $1 billion in just three months.

Ilya Sutskever, one of the leading figures in the world of artificial intelligence, has successfully completed the funding round for Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a company he founded after leaving OpenAI.

Sutskever co-founded the company in June 2024 alongside former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and former Apple AI leader Daniel Gross. SSI secured $1 billion in investments from some of Silicon Valley’s largest investor groups, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and SV Angel. As a result, the company’s valuation has risen to $5 billion.

Their goal is to surpass human intelligence

SSI defines its core mission as developing “safe” superintelligence. Rather than focusing on commercial products, the company aims to create artificial intelligence that surpasses human intelligence, with safety as its top priority, as reflected in its name. SSI is dedicated to engineering and scientific breakthroughs rather than productization within the AI industry.

Currently, SSI has only 10 employees and operates from its headquarters in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. With the recent investment, the company plans to strengthen its systems and recruit top talent.

At a time when interest in long-term AI research is declining, SSI’s successful investment round demonstrates that major players in the industry still hold strong beliefs in the future of AI. Additionally, SSI is positioning itself as a competitor to OpenAI.
